NURTURING COMPASSION: SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS PROMOTING VEGETARIANISM AND SUSTAINABILITY

For high school students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting vegetarianism and have adopted a vegetarian lifestyle, the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) offers scholarships to support their educational goals. In 2025, VRG will award a total of $50,000 in scholarships, including one scholarship of $10,000 and six scholarships of $5,000 each, along with a number of runner up awards. These scholarships are intended for high school seniors who have been active in advocating for vegetarianism, such as by organizing events, creating educational materials, or leading initiatives to encourage others to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle.

Applicants are evaluated based on their advocacy efforts, personal commitment to vegetarianism, and plans to continue promoting vegetarianism in the future. This includes a written essay, references, and a high school transcript. VRG selects recipients who demonstrate compassion, courage, and a strong desire to foster a peaceful world through a plant-based lifestyle. The scholarship also stands out because it recognizes students who are not only committed to the principles of vegetarianism but have also actively worked to make a positive impact on their communities.

Ideal scholarship recipients come from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds but share a common passion for promoting sustainability, health, and ethical eating. Previous winners have been involved in a range of academic areas such as environmental studies, public health, nutrition, animal rights advocacy, and education. For instance, Sarah, a 2024 winner, plans to study environmental science with a focus on sustainable agriculture, while Alex, another winner, is pursuing a degree in public health with a special interest in the health benefits of plant-based diets. The scholarship is open to students who demonstrate a strong drive in their chosen field and are committed to advocating for a more compassionate and environmentally conscious world.

Previous winners have expressed how the scholarship has helped them further their education and continue their advocacy. "This scholarship has been a game-changer for me," says Sarah, a recipient from 2024. "It allowed me to focus on my studies while also expanding my efforts to raise awareness about vegetarianism." Another 2024 winner, Alex, shared, "Winning this scholarship motivated me to continue my advocacy work at college, and I’m excited to spread the message further."

To apply, students must submit an essay addressing their journey to vegetarianism, their advocacy efforts, and their future plans for promoting the lifestyle. The scholarship is unique in its focus on students who actively work to inspire change and who envision a future of social and environmental responsibility through a plant-based diet.

Applications for the Dell Scholars Program typically require a detailed account of the applicant’s academic background, personal challenges, and aspirations. Students are encouraged to share how their experiences reflect the program’s core values of resilience and determination. Essays, recommendation letters, and a description of participation in a college readiness program are integral parts of the application process.
