CELEBRATING YOUNG CHANGE-MAKERS: THE GLORIA BARRON PRIZE FOR COMMUNITY HEROES

For students who have been deeply involved in their community and people around them, especially those who are able to demonstrate having made significant difference to people and the environment. There are various levels of awards, the top being in the range of $10,000 each, to be used for higher education. A reference letter must be included with your application.

In the most recent year alone, there have been more than 20 winners of the Gloria Barron Prize, most of whom are depicted on their website. So make sure to check their profiles. Having been established more than two decades ago, this scholarship resource has helped fund more than 600 young students with almost 30 million funding.

The scholarship fund encourages applications especially from public-spirited students. In terms of age of application, they are quite flexible and are focused on younger students. You can apply as long as you are between the ages of 8 and 18. You do not have to be a U.S. citizen either; as long as you are a permanent resident of the U.S. or of Canada and are working on an inspiring service project and have been working on it or similar service projects at least for the past 1 year, you are qualified to apply.

The organization presents a clear timeline on their website; according to this, call for applications is made some time around early January, while the application deadline is April 15th. The winning candidates are then announced some time in September.

The Gloria Barron scholarship selection board makes every effort to be as objective as possible in selecting the winning candidates and have presented a clear set of well-defined criteria. In a nutshell, most important criterion is the requirement that the winners have made an outstanding service activity which has had a crucial and positive impact on other people and/or the world, and that this service activity has been initiated primarily by the applicant themselves and has not been completed as part of a school assignment alone. In addition, the winners must prove that they possess positive spirit, generosity and high moral standards, as well as having accomplished something that could potentially inspire others. Whether the applicants' work has previously been recognized by other institutions or the media is not a criterion for selection.
