HONK YOUR WAY TO COLLEGE: THE CHICK AND SOPHIE MAJOR MEMORIAL DUCK CALLING SCHOLARSHIP

For students who possess the unique talent of duck calling, the Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest offers a distinctive scholarship opportunity. Open to high school seniors, contestants have 90 seconds to showcase four specific calls: hail, feed, comeback, and mating, adhering to the standards set by the World Duck Calling Contest. Scholarships are awarded as follows: first place receives $5,000, second place $2,000, third place $1,250, and fourth place $750, totaling $9,000 in scholarships.

What makes this scholarship exceptional is its celebration of a specialized skill deeply rooted in tradition and culture. Since its inception in 1974, the contest has awarded over $114,000 in scholarships to young duck callers attending 32 different colleges and universities across 13 states. Although this may not be a huge number, this scholarship is also listed on our site to give you inspiration as to finding resources that may fit your interests, no matter how unique they may sound at first.

Testimonials from past winners highlight the contest's impact. One recipient shared, "Winning this scholarship not only provided financial support but also connected me with a community that values and preserves the art of duck calling." Another noted, "Participating in the contest was a unique experience that honored my heritage and passion for the outdoors."

Past winners have pursued diverse educational paths, attending institutions such as Arkansas Tech University, Iowa State University, and the University of Arkansas.

To apply, eligible students must provide a copy of their high school transcript and proper identification at registration. The contest is held annually in Stuttgart, Arkansas, typically in late November, in conjunction with the World's Champion Duck Calling Contest. Notably, there is no entry fee, making it accessible to all interested high school seniors.
