This page provides information specifically for the prestigious Davidson Fellows Scholarships. Check below for more scholarships to apply for as a high school student, based on your grade.
For students who have successfully completed a significant project in one of the several pre-determined scholarly categories. For high school students, these categories are: (i) STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and (ii) humanities (literature, music and philosophy). There are approximately 20 awards every year, at $10,000, $25,000, or $50,000.
As having completed a significant work is the primary criterion for this highly prestigious scholarship, we must define what significant work comprises. They do a very good job of explaining this on their website; essentially, your work must be found by the experts in that field to be meaningful and full of potential to result in a positive contribution of some kind to your society or the world. This includes, among other possibilities, (i) an extraordinarily creative way of applying existing knowledge in a new domain, (ii) an idea of yours that will have high impact of some sort, (iii) a creative solution to an existing problem that has wide-ranging implications on different areas of life or science, (iv) a discovery of some sort (and particularly those that have interfaces with different fields) that can be replicated via an experiment or through life, (v) a performance that is outstanding and provides evidence of your exceptional skills or intelligence, and so on. You will need two nominators.
Note that, for this scholarship, you can apply not only as an individual but also in teams of two, in which case both members need to satisfy the criteria for application. No more than two are permitted in a team and the funds will, in that case, need to be split between the two members. Of course, in this case, as with the individual case, you will need two nominators, but for the entire team.
It should be noted that the Davidson Institute, which is the name of the foundation that provides the Davidson Scholarships, cares a lot about your project being at or around the college graduate level and possessing a depth of scholarship that is notable in that area of study. Although scholarships applicants are invited in both STEM and humanities fields for high school students, projects in the pure arts are not eligible for consideration. These fields include photography, sculpture, film, and visuals.
The categories for which you can apply are, more specifically, the following: (i) science, (ii) technology, (iii) engineering, (iv) mathematics, (v) literature, (vi) music, (vii) philosophy, and (viii) outside the box (i.e. for gifted students who excel in an area (excluding the above art categories), but that area does not specifically fit in one of the other areas specified here. This may be an interdisciplinary area, among others).
